For my final project, I created a replica foldable trench periscope that was installed in the Heugh Battery Museum's immersive trench warfare exhibition. The Heugh Battery is a fantastic local war museum situated on the Headland, Hartlepool.
The installation features a realistic miniature battlefield scene, complete with a Mark I tank and soldiers traversing thick mud and perilous barbed wire. As you look through the periscope, you will see the diorama seems to shift in 3D space, drawing you in to No Man’s Land.
The model box is lit from the inside and features a custom panoramic matt painting. The periscope will become a permanent part of the museum’s exhibition, offering visitors a unique and engaging connection to trench warfare in WWI.
To utilize my miniature model making skills and contribute to local organizations, I contacted the Heugh Battery Museum through a friend's recommendation. Together, we came up with the idea of creating a replica trench periscope for visitors to peer through and see a detailed diorama. This project sparked my interest in model making for museums and inspired me to write my university dissertation on effective interactive exhibitions. I incorporated this knowledge into the periscope project, resulting in a unique and engaging addition to the museum.
